Best Boy Magazine and Normal Cinema Club present an anti-festive screening of MCCABE AND MRS MILLER to celebrate two years of Best Boy
O Come All Ye Faithful!
Two years ago, Best Boy Magazine was born of Christmas Spirit, like a little fella’ in a manger. To celebrate the occasion, Best Boy presents three new shorts, much like gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but also like the three ghosts of Christmas past! Because what we are about to share will change how you view Christmas, life & death, and the world…
But that’s not all! To honour this special anniversary, Best Boy Magazine is collaborating with Normal Cinema Club to present a screening of Robert Altman’s anti-festive opus MCCABE AND MRS MILLER.
Warren Beatty stars as McCabe, a gambler (pretending he’s a notorious gunman) who sets up shop in the small town of Presbyterian Church. He meets Mrs Miller, a British madam, who he recruits to run his brothel. Things go well, and the town booms around them, but the long hand of capitalism soon makes itself known, and McCabe is thrust into fighting for his town, his work and his life.
Robert Altman’s iconic ‘anti-Western’ is a landmark of the New Hollywood movement. We don’t even really need to talk about how good it is, folks, it’s just that good. The soundtrack features the haunting, longing tones of Leonard Cohen, setting that miserable/melancholic atmosphere for the rest of the picture. When certain people long for the old days of the West, they usually neglect to remember how cold and muddy it was, too. The slush and the snow are beautifully captured by the great Vilmos Zsigmond, shooter of many great 1970s flicks, before bowing out with work on the great… The Mindy Project.
Before you go home for Christmas and resent spending time with your family…. Come and spend an evening with Best Boy Magazine and Normal Cinema Club, and resent the evil primordial force of capitalism instead!!!
This screening will take place in The Deer’s Head. The Christmas sales have struck early, and special discount issues of Best Boy Magazine will be available. Doors will open at 7pm with the film beginning at 7.30pm. The feature will be presented with subtitles. This is a strictly 18+ event.
